At the end of Daniel’s life, he received a mysterious message from God: “Many shall run to and fro, and knowledge shall increase.”
But in that same moment, Daniel was told to seal up his mysterious vision and leave it until the time of the end.
That vision, Revelation shows us, was unsealed by Christ when he ascended to the right hand of the Father, and as a result a series of cascading events is unleashed on the earth, events which run throughout the church age and climax in the Lord’s return.
The world’s response to calamities, just as God had told Daniel, is to run this way and that looking for more information. And never in the course of all history has this been more true than in the last few weeks.
This is not because today’s crisis is worse than many others which preceded it, but because it is far better publicized. We are confronted with a deluge of information live-streaming continuously at us from every screen available.
My question is this. What filter are you using to view this information?
That’s an important question, because God’s perspective on these events is quite different from that of our secular culture.
Our greatest need is not to know more information, but to assess the information we have from God’s perspective.
The last book of the Bible is extremely helpful in this regard. It tells us three things:
Trouble will come.
Satan is behind it, but God is using it.
Trouble will end.
Pope Francis had a great word the other day. Keep your eyes on Jesus while your boat is going through the storm. Why? Because he is the One who controls the storm.
I can’t predict the course of the next few weeks, but I can give you some advice: Keep your eyes on him. Don’t understand the Bible in light of the news. Understand the news in light of the Bible.
Governments have been criticized for not being ready for the disaster. But what is worse is if God’s people are not ready for the answer. If our motivation is fear and our goal is survival, we may miss what’s coming.
So be prepared for what God is going to do on the other side.
It may be greater than any of us think.
